The Basics of Cinema Room Design:

Planning is essential in your success of designing your own Cinema Room.

Choosing the location:

When planning your Cinema Room you will need to choose the right location for you cinema room. The trend in location is choosing a space which is least suited to family life and busy household traffic. Rooms that have the least amount of natural light and without expansive ceilings are perfect for transforming a dead space into a cosy cinema room.  To navigate around a high ceiling, you can use the Independent Ceiling solution with Reslient Bars to create a room with the correct dimensions and making it possible to incorporate built in lighting, surround sound and the projector screen.

Your Theme

This is a very personal choice, however with a few basic ideas you can make an elegant, luxurious or contemporary space. Creating a tactile mood board with fabrics and soft furnishings to reflect your personality and home is a good starting point. Inspiration for themes could come from the old Glamourous Hollywood Theatres or The Art Deco Cinema’s  with clean lines and colour creating a chic atmosphere.

Choosing Your Colour Palette

Colour palette’s follow closely with your desired Theme, using textured walls from flock wall finishes will create an ambient atmosphere, positively affecting the acoustics and enhancing your viewing experience. When using deep dark colours such as deep reds, moody blues and even black this will maximise the contrast between light (the screen) and dark the furnishing and colour scheme.

Lighting

Wall lighting tends to be the popular choice as this type of lighting does not obstruct your view and when used in conjunction with a dimmer switch you can adjust the lighting to suit the mood. You could also choose to use floor lighting which is flush with the flooring, again creating that ambient lighting and obtaining the right balance when viewing. This type of lighting can also help in accessing the exit points with minimal disruption to your viewing pleasure.

Creating Luxury

Leisure time is about relaxation and enjoyment. Creating a Cinema Room using sumptuous fabrics, soft furnishings and cosy textures will give your room a luxurious ambience.

 Layout

You will need to consider the layout of your room before adding large furniture or decorative objects, this is because in the Cinema Room the View is the most important feature. You would need to arrange seating so that everyone is able to view the screen and access the seats without causing too much disturbance.

Sofas & Chairs and occasional seating

Firstly consider how many people would be using the Cinema Room and make sure that the seating is comfortable for everyone. Reclining seats work well in a large room and screen, positioning seating into two rows will create space for more people and by simply raising the platform of the back row this will allow these seats to have a good view of the screen. If you have a smaller cinema room, an L-shaped seating plan will work well. You will still have room to stretch out and it creates a relaxed atmosphere.

Planning for more occasional seating is a good idea and this can be achieved by using large oversized floor pillow or beanbag seating when you are hosting additional guests. Young children particularly like this informal seating as they can struggle with sitting still for long periods of time.

Side Tables

Small tables to the side of the sofas or seating is often better and creates less disturbance to others, instead of a large coffee style table where people would need to reach across or over others.

Cabinets & Consoles for Equipment

The style and size of cabinets and consoles will vary depending on what equipment you will be using. For Example a TV can be mounted or a projector can be stored in the ceiling above, thus minimising the need to large bulky furniture and leaving room for luxurious seating.

Television / Screen

This will be your focal point and will need to be placed In the context of the room and other furnishings. Thinking of the space it will be housed in, the size of the wall and to what proportion it will take to the space itself and whether the projector will be in the recess of the ceiling.

Window Dressings

It is essential to use window dressings that block out daylight and create a perfect dark environment for watching movies.  Black out roller blinds are good for chic clean lines with no fuss or you could choose long velvet or heavy curtains to create that luxurious movie theatre atmosphere. This also helps with noise absorption and acoustics in the room itself.

Finishing Touches

This part of the final design in the Cinema Room will bring your planning and theme together, incorporating cushions and throws to add colour texture or patterns will create a warm cosy and inviting environment.
